The amounts of carbon stated to be offset are rather subjective. Caveats about calculating “average” carbon offsets:
- Most carbon load data does not take into account the manufacturing process. Enormous amounts of energy are used to produce common office items such as laptops, monitors, and mice—often more energy that the devices themselves consume.
- The artist understands that the carbon offset commitments are only promises and emphasizes that there are no real guarantees that contributor promises will be kept.
about buying offsets vs. changing your habits
The carbon offset industry is rapidly expanding based on the exploitation of guilt. The problem with many of these companies is that you buy offset credits and you can’t be sure whether the money is going into legitimate offset projects. A number of the reforestation projects are based in developing countries where biological forest diversity is being lost to the monocultures engendered by many offset programs.
Buying carbon offsets does not discourage wasteful behaviors — they merely allow people to continue their everyday lives feeling less guilty about how and what they consume.
